As we honor Native American Heritage Month, it’s crucial to reflect on our practices within a nation founded on colonialism. We want to amplify this astute message from enrolled Seminole Nation member and lawyer, Bree Black Horse regarding land acknowledgments. Though intended to recognize Indigenous peoples' history and resilience, land acknowledgments can also reinforce a long history of Native American erasure and tokenization. Bree shares her perspective on how we can all move beyond performative gestures towards intentional language and solidarity. Let's use this month to not just acknowledge, but to actively advocate for Indigenous rights and amplify their voices.
